The tradition continues… |
 |
Next Sunday, don’t forget to check out the Christmas
Tree in the back of church. This is our traditional “Giving
Tree”, and the ornaments will have gift suggestions on them for
those we hope to help out this year. You can make Christmas a
little brighter for someone in need, by taking an ornament or
two off the tree and purchasing the suggested gift. This year’s
ornaments will request gifts for: Our Lady’s Inn, Homeless
Veterans, and nursing home residents at Avalon Gardens. We are
collecting an assortment of baby items for Our Lady’s Inn, warm
knit hats for the Homeless Veterans, and we are making up a
Christmas goodie package for the nursing home residents. Thank
you and God Bless You for your generosity in supporting the
“Giving Tree” tradition at St. Mary Magdalen. |

From the desk of Fr. Leo... |
 |
As we
approach the end of the Church Year, the lectionary turns our
thoughts to the time of Christ’s blessed return. There is an old
German hymn entitled “Die Zeit ist nunmehr nah” (P. Gerhardt,
1653) and I give the words in the
bulletin for you
to ponder and enjoy. |

South Side Youth Ministry |
 |
South Side
Youth Ministry recently returned from fall retreat. The retreat
was rooted in the Psalms, discovering how they contain the music
of the bible and the prayer of the Church. While on retreat, we
challenged the 45 participants to write their own psalm,
capturing in a bold and honest way where they are in a
relationship with God. For the next few weeks, I will share some
of the psalms the teens wrote.
“My Lord, my Lord. I am on my knees again. Aid me, fix me, love
me, for like old wood, my soul has grown splintered. I sigh to
the stars, to your heart, questioning what seems to have been
ignored by your knowing eye. I cry out in an empty room, oh
Lord; why is an echo my only response? I walk blindly in the
unforgiving darkness, searching for you; why do my feet stumble
and grow callous while waiting for your light? Tears fill your
absence and drop from my warm cheeks; Do you let them fall, let
them whither my fragile heart? Or do you catch them as they
drop, count and collect their endless numbers? Come to me, my
Lord! I have tried to repair myself, but bare no fruit. Every
beautiful blessing surrounds me, but my insides are perishing.
I am irreplaceable, but still broken beyond measure. You are my
Savior, my Lord, my Father; I need you more than air. Have pity
on me. Rescue me from being consumed by the waves of my
disbelief. I will rely on you above all else. I will raise my
voice, chant the words, ‘My Savior has won the battle in me’. I
will trumpet your wonderful name until all my brothers and
sisters fall to their knees in awe of you.
It is not in your unimaginable nature to leave me thirsty for
things beyond drink, nor to leave me hungry for things beyond
food. So like a child waiting for the return of its father, I
will wait for you to find me in my darkness and take me into
your protective arms.”
Peace, Greg

Children’s Liturgy of the Word |
 |
|
Every Sunday
during the 10:30am Mass. This is a great opportunity for
children between the ages of 4 and 8 to hear the day’s readings
proclaimed in language which they can understand, and be
instructed at their age appropriate level.
We are blessed to have young people from the South Side Youth
Ministry and parishioners who will conduct this service weekly.
Please invite other families to come to the 10:30am Mass and
bring their children. |

Please
note: The Rectory business office will be closed on Thursday,
November 24 and Friday, November 25 for the Thanksgiving holiday. |
Thanksgiving Day Offertory Collection - By tradition the
offertory collection at the Thanksgiving Day Mass is given to the
St. Mary Magdalen, St. Vincent de Paul Society for it’s use in
providing for the poor, less fortunate and for the numerous
unemployed. Your kindness in remembering those that are struggling
financially will be so greatly appreciated. |
March for
Life, DC - St. Mary Magdalen will be attending the March
for Life in DC but this year we will be going directly to the
National Shrine of Devine Mercy and than to DC. So basically we
will spend two nights in Stockbrige, MA and than head over to DC on
Sunday, stay one night there and attend the March on Monday. We
always head back to St. Louis on Monday evening after the March,
arriving in St. Louis on Tuesday. We do have space available—for
further details call Marisol in the evenings at 481-8408.
